Advantages and disadvantages of gantry loaders

Introduction

A gantry loader is a loader that consists of a gate frame that covers the entire machine tool and an arm that feeds the material to be processed into the machine tool.

A thorough analysis of the gantry loader


In this column, we will introduce some of the differences between loaders that use regular 6-axis robots and gantry loaders.

1. Space can be secured in front of the machine

With a loader that uses a normal 6-axis robot, the robot must be placed in front of the machine tool to unload materials.
This caused problems such as a reduced working space for workers in front of the machine tool. Also, using a robot requires safety fences, which increases the overall space required in the factory.

Gantry loaders mainly operate on two axes, with an arm that lifts up and down and another that slides it left and right.
The gantry loader moves the arm holding the material over the machine tool, eliminating the need for a loader in front of the machine tool and allowing for a larger workspace for the operator.
In addition, the safety fence passes over machine tools where people do not pass, so it does not take up much space in the factory.

2. Can also be used to transport multiple machine tools

By arranging the machine tools side by side and extending the distance between the left and right slides of the gantry loader, it can be used as a loader that can handle multiple machine tools.

3. Vertical space is required

In terms of factory floor space, gantry loaders are space-saving loaders.
However, in terms of height, a large amount of space is required in the factory vertically, as it requires the height for the stroke to move the arm up and down, as well as space to slide left and right over the top of the machine.

4. Large-scale construction work required

Gantry loaders require a frame that covers the entire machine tool, making the equipment large-scale.
Also, since the sliding arm needs to be supported, the frame is often larger in size to accommodate it.
