Reverse Engineering and Components ~Screw Shafts~

Introduction

We receive inquiries about reverse engineering for older machines that are beyond repair, and we get inquiries about a wide variety of machines. However, there is one part that we are surprisingly often asked to work on.

In this column, I would like to explain the role of such parts and why reverse gear is often required.

1. What is a screw shaft?

The part we'll be introducing today is called a screw shaft.

Simply put, it's a component where a spiral plate is welded to a shaft.
Because the screw shaft rotates to move objects along a helical plate, it is used for conveying materials and for transporting molten resin material in molding machines used to produce resin products.

2. Why is reverse engineering required?

The screw shaft, by its very nature, is subjected to the most extreme forces.

For example, this screw shaft plays an important role in transporting chips in machining equipment, but if foreign objects get caught in it, the screw shaft is the first part to suffer damage, making it a component that is highly susceptible to breakage.
In addition, with machines that have been in use for a long time, if regular maintenance is not performed, the grease may run out, leading to damage to the shaft.

The reason why screw shafts are subject to reverse engineering rather than replacement is that they are often made to fit specific machines. While replacement and repair would be ideal, if there is no support, screw shafts made to fit specific machines become parts that are no longer manufactured.

Therefore, it is necessary to reverse engineer the design to create new drawings and prepare it for production.
