Reverse Engineering for Enhanced Safety – Safety Fences
Introduction
Reverse engineering often involves requests to recreate parts from older machines that are no longer supported.
However, many older machines prioritize production capacity and do not meet modern safety standards. While the machines may function without problems, we sometimes receive requests to manufacture new parts to ensure worker safety.
In this column, we will introduce some of those problems.

Machinery with exposed rotating mechanisms always presents the possibility of accidents that cannot be avoided simply by being careful, such as losing balance and touching the machine, or having your clothing sleeve touch the machine.
Ideally, there would be guards to prevent direct contact with the rotating parts, or procedures would be in place to minimize accidents. However, some older machines prioritize ease of operation, resulting in designs where the rotating parts are easily accessible.
The safest measure is to install safety barriers to prevent people or their clothing from coming into contact with the rotating parts while they are in operation.
This significantly reduces the possibility of unintended contact.
However, this comes at the cost of having to remove the fence to access the machinery, which will reduce work efficiency compared to before.
In some work sites, even though safety fences are installed, workers may modify them without authorization, leaving the doors constantly open while operating the equipment—effectively rendering the safety fences useless.
Since improving either safety or work efficiency inevitably compromises the other, when we use reverse engineering to enhance safety, we discuss the specifications with the actual workers involved to ensure they are satisfied and agreeable.
